A deposit protection scheme has published figures regarding the nationalities of its overseas landlords.

The Deposit Protection Service, known as the DPS, says more than half of overseas landlords using its service are based in Europe, with France topping the list of countries with over 13%.

Surprisingly, the organisation posted low numbers of Chinese and Russian landlords with representation of just 0.65% and 0.1% respectively.

Spain (6.69%), Ireland (6.43%), Germany (4.72%) and Switzerland (4.30%) all join France in the top ten countries using the scheme, which protects deposits for landlords and tenants during tenancies as well as handling disputes.

A large proportion of DPS’ international landlords also hail from English-speaking nations, with almost 12% based in Australia and high numbers in the USA, Ireland and New Zealand.

The firm also found that Arabic-speaking landlords account for almost 5% of its overseas clients and named Oceania as the continent with the second-highest proportion of international DPS landlords.

Kevin Firth, Director of the DPS, said: “These figures provide a fascinating picture of the truly global diversity of landlords and it’s in every landlord and tenant's interests for deposits to be protected.”
