Best Places guide to aid investors on up-and-coming locations

The Sunday Times has published its latest ‘Best Places’ guide - often considered a pointer to up-and-coming locations which could be ripe for investment.

Although both the Best Places and the Sunday Times are perhaps less influential than in years past, they have historically chosen locations which have gone on to deliver above-average stage house price rises and rental yields.

North Berwick, East Lothian has been named the best place this year.  The Scottish seaside town tops a list of 72 locations across the UK.

In addition, the annual guide named ten regional winners. These are:

EAST OF ENGLAND: Wivenhoe, Essex;  LONDON: Clerkenwell; MIDLANDS: Stirchley, Birmingham; NORTHERN IRELAND: Portstewart, Co Londonderry; NORTH & NORTHEAST: Leeds; NORTHWEST: Stockport, Greater Manchester; SCOTLAND: West End, Dundee; SOUTHEAST: Folkestone, Kent; SOUTHWEST: Sherborne, Dorset; and WALES: Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.

North Berwick is the first Scottish winner in the 12-year history of Best Places to Live. It was picked for its combination of a great high street, a great school, the great outdoors and family-friendly houses.

The judges were impressed by its easy connections to Edinburgh and the way life revolves around the town’s two beaches as well as the wealth of activities whatever your age. They also highlighted the thriving independent shops as a sign of the positive effect that small businesses can have on a community.

The Sunday Times’s judges visited all the locations and assessed factors from schools to transport, broadband speeds to culture, as well as access to green spaces and the health of the high street.

The guide has again been sponsored by the mortgage lender Halifax.
