The most popular regions in Europe for prospective expats and holiday home owners have been revealed by sales website Your Overseas Home.

Chief editor Christopher Nye says: “Europe offers a wealth of enticing regions for property buyers. From the charming coastal towns of the Algarve in Portugal to the breathtaking landscapes of Tuscany in Italy, each region has its unique appeal – whether it’s the sun-soaked beaches, cultural richness, or investment potential.

“From our data, it seems that the general trend for property buyers in 2023 continues to be prioritising coastal regions and those that are renowned for their cultural significance and natural beauty. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that places like Paphos in Cyprus and Andalusia in Spain are proving to be the most popular destinations in their respective countries at the moment.”

1.      Cyprus – Paphos Your Overseas Home says: “Paphos is a captivating city known for its historical significance, so there’s no wonder so many people are looking to buy a second home or relocate here. Divided into Ktima and Kato Paphos, there’s plenty for history buffs to see and do. From ancient ruins, including Roman villas with exquisite mosaics and an impressive amphitheatre, to the renowned Tombs of the Kings. Nearby are lovely landscapes like the untouched Akamas Peninsula, serene beaches such as Coral Bay and Lara Bay, and the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite at Petra tou Romiou. Property in Paphos caters to all preferences and budgets. Options include villas with private pools, apartments in complexes with communal facilities and properties in coastal or inland areas. It’s also popular for retirees, offering a relaxed lifestyle, quality healthcare and investment opportunities.

2.      France – Nouvelle-Aquitaine Your Overseas Home says: Nouvelle-Aquitaine is the largest administrative region in France and is home to several well-known towns, cities, and villages. Some of these include regional capital and UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bordeaux, and the picturesque port city La Rochelle. People continue to be drawn to this vibrant region of France for its cultural richness, gastronomy, wine and overall quality of life. There are many property options for those interested in buying in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The region has a mix of historic towns, cities, and picturesque villages, with property types including traditional houses, charming cottages, modern apartments and luxury villas.”

3.      Greece – Crete “Crete, the largest Greek island, continues to be an enticing destination for both individuals and families seeking a new place to call home. Boasting a strong expat community in areas like Chania and Heraklion, as well as an affordable cost of living, the island’s cultural heritage is evident in its traditional villages, unique customs and delicious cuisine. Buyers in Crete can choose from traditional homes, modern apartments and luxurious villas, with prices usually based on specific location and proximity to the coast.”

4.      Italy – Tuscany “Tuscany, in central Italy, is a region renowned for its timeless beauty and culinary delights. Characterised by rolling hills, picturesque vineyards and cypress-lined avenues, the region’s idyllic countryside offers postcard-perfect vistas that capture the essence of Tuscany’s charm – so it’s no surprise that so many people want to call it home.  Prospective buyers can select from beautiful villas and farmhouses, historic townhouses, or contemporary apartments. Prices fluctuate according to location, size and condition, with popular areas like Florence or the Chianti region demanding higher prices.”

5.      Portugal – Faro “Faro, the capital city of Portugal’s Algarve region, offers the perfect mix of history and cultural interest that proves popular for both holidaymakers and prospective expats. First of all, Faro is a haven for food lovers – particularly seafood enthusiasts. The city’s proximity to the sea means that visitors can savour a huge variety of fresh fish and seafood dishes in many local restaurants and markets. The city is also located within the stunning protected wetland, Ria Formosa Natural Park. Faro’s property market is robust, driven by domestic and international demand. Coastal areas like Albufeira and Vilamoura are particularly sought after, offering apartments, townhouses and even villas with sea views. The Golden Visa Programme has also attracted international investors, further bolstering demand, whilst the region’s popularity as a tourist destination creates massive rental potential.”

6.      Spain – Andalusia “Andalusia, located in southern Spain, is a region offering a blend of ancient cities like Seville, Granada and Cordoba. Each city showcases impressive architecture and historic landmarks such as the Alhambra and the Great Mosque. Coastal areas, including the Costa del Sol, are home to beautiful beaches and popular resorts. Inland, Andalusia boasts phenomenal mountain ranges like the Sierra Nevada, as well as white-washed villages such as  Ronda. From world-renowned cities to outstanding beaches of the Costa del Sol and picturesque white-washed villages, there’s something for everyone here.”
