Haringtons, an independent buying agents based in London, has seen a rise in enquiries from the City of New York as the Big Apple loses its shine.

“And Just Like That…(the revival and sequel to Sex and the City) may have made us swoon about New York, but the reality is now far from the glamour we see on screen,” Plum Fenton, London specialist at Haringtons, said.

“Increasing levels of crime, a country with no social infrastructure and skyrocketing levels of homelessness has taken the shine off the big apple, consequently we have and will see more professionals move to or back to London.”

She added: “London and New York have been competitors for many years, both cities that don’t sleep whilst catering for a variety of tastes whether you’re a tech starter, socialite or culture vulture; there had been marginal differences before the pandemic, but London is now head and shoulders above its competitor.”

Fenton said that aiding this is the government’s introduction of the ‘High Potential Visa’ that will enable potential individuals to live in the UK without the need for sponsorship.

Qualification for this visa is given to those that have graduated from a top global university – meaning there is no longer a need to be sponsored.

“There has been an increase of enquiries from those that called New York home; London offers value for money comparatively without compromises on style, quality and most importantly townhouses,” Fenton continued. “Where Prime London had lost some of its shine during the pandemic, I suspect this will have an influence in its comeback.”
