Property investment will be the best-performing investment asset in 2022, making it the top pick ahead of cash, stocks and cryptocurrency, according to nearly one in three British adults (30%).
Finder.com’s Retail Investor Sentiment Report surveyed 2,001 British adults in December 2021 and 39,573 adults globally to reveal that Brits are among the most likely to back brick-and-mortar investments out of 26 countries.
The 30% of Brits who said property would be the best performing investment this year were comfortably above the global average of 23%. The next most popular pick is cash, with almost a quarter of Brits (24%) saying this will be the best investment in 2022, followed by stocks and ETFs (17%) and cryptocurrency (15%).
Michelle Stevens, mortgage specialist at Finder.com, believes the survey results suggest rising interest rates aren’t deterring Brits from thinking property is a good investment.
“Brits are most likely to back property over other investments, despite the Bank of England recently raising the base interest rate. The Bank has hinted that further interest rate hikes are on the horizon which could see an end to the house price boom we’ve witnessed over the past two years,” she said.
“If you’re considering purchasing property this year it’s important to factor in possible rate hikes as this could make mortgage repayments more expensive, particularly if you’re on a variable home loan rate.”
She added: “Only time will tell if this eventuates, but it’s important to plan ahead for all possible scenarios especially as the market remains pretty uncertain.”
