Revealed – where are the cheapest Euro property hotspots for sunshine?

A holiday home abroad is a dream for many, while others like the idea of an investment property in the sun, bringing in a good income each year. For many years, Brits have been snapping up properties in hot countries like Spain, Italy and Portugal in search of either a sun-filled lifestyle or a savvy investment asset.

But where are the cheapest hotspots in Europe for those looking to secure a sun-soaked property while not breaking the bank?

Inspired by the recent heatwave in Britain, and the continuously changing housing market across Europe, the mortgage experts at money.co.uk decided to research the European locations where homeowners would get the most sun for their money.

The analysis found that properties in Campobasso, Italy, are the best value European location for a property in the sun. Situated in the south of the country and nestled between the Matese and Sannio mountains, the median house price in Campobasso is £29,674, and the region receives an average of 224 hours of sunshine each month.

Even though it doesn’t have the most sunshine hours across Europe, the very low property cost makes the city the best value for money.

In second place is Beira Baixa, in north-central Portugal and just south of the cities of Viseu and Guarda. The mountainous region receives an incredible 262 hours of sunshine on average each month, with house prices standing at a moderately low average of just above £51,000.

In third place is León, a famous and historic city in northwest Spain, which receives an average of 258 hours of sunshine each month. House prices in León cost an average of just over £94,600, resulting in a rank of number three in money.co.uk’s list.

Lasithi, in the easternmost part of Crete, one of the best-known Greek islands, took fourth spot. It has an average house price of just above £129,000, but luckily receives the second-highest average hours of sunshine in Europe at 258 hours.

In fifth place, meanwhile, is Mayenne, a commune in France. Despite having an average property price of only £87,889.28, the relatively low sunshine hours each month (164) brought its ranking down to fifth.

The fifth most expensive location abroad for sunshine is the metropolitan area of Lisboa (Lisbon), in Portugal. The second oldest European capital city, it is a slight surprise that house prices in the Portuguese capital are on the cheaper side at an average of just over £430.070, with holiday homeowners here able to enjoy an average of 263 hours of sunshine a month.
