Investing in a ski chalet: where to look and what to consider

Are you itching to get back on the slopes after missing a ski season? If the answer is ‘yes’, you’re not alone! Demand for ski accommodation is likely to soar this year, which is one of the reasons why this could be the perfect time to purchase your own ski chalet.

The writers at the Luxury Ski Show explain the benefits of purchasing a ski chalet and the things you need to consider.

What are the benefits of investing in a ski chalet?

With the average person spending anywhere between £500-£2,000 on their annual ski trips, it may be worth considering a long-term plan which could end up saving (and even making) you money.

Ski chalets have excellent rental potential. So, if you enjoy going on regular ski holidays and would like to invest in something worthwhile, a ski chalet is the ideal choice. As 90% of ski homeowners opt to rent their property all-year-round, more people are realising the potential of a ski chalet investment.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there is increasing demand for private accommodation, such as ski chalets. So, now is also a great time to buy – after the suspension of ski seasons, the markets are especially buoyant with people looking to both sell and buy their ski homes.

Affordable ski destinations

Once you’ve decided to invest in a ski chalet, the question is – where should you buy? When choosing your resort, you should consider your own skiing needs (if you wish to make use of the chalet yourself), and the resort’s dual-season potential. Ideally, you’ll want to choose somewhere that would attract visitors in the summer as well as the winter, so you can receive rental income all-year-round.

If you wish to use the chalet yourself at certain times of the year, having your own ski chalet will mean that you can self-cater, potentially saving you a lot of money.

Here are two affordable resorts which attract visitors at any time of year.

Les Houches, France

A lesser-known ski resort, Les Houches is in the Chamonix Mont-Blanc Valley and is an affordable alternative to Chamonix itself. It is geared towards beginning and intermediate skiers, so a great place to hone your skills. It’s also a brilliant spot for summer hiking and biking, so there is plenty to do all-year-round. Two ski lifts operate in the summer months to take you to viewpoints and allow you to explore the mountains.

Madesimo, Italy

In the Italian lakes of Northern Italy, Madesimo is a small ski town with plenty of appeal. Its high altitude means that you’re almost guaranteed snow throughout the whole season. In the summer months, hiking excursions are very popular, and tourists enjoy taking in the spectacular panoramic views. It’s also in a great location for a day trip to Milan and the lakes. Why not take a short two-hour drive to Milan and pass Lake Como en route?

Luxury ski destinations

If you’re looking to buy your chalet in a luxurious location, there are plenty of dual season resorts to cater to this also. Here are two resorts that are worth considering if you’d like to purchase your chalet in an affluent ski resort.

Megève, France

Megève usually gets snow from December to April. So, if you invest in a ski chalet here, you’ll sure to receive visitors throughout the ski season. Summer activities include mountain biking, paragliding, helicopter rides and much more. The village itself is also buzzing all-year-round, with high-end restaurants, boutiques and plenty of timeless French charm. Despite being a luxurious resort, it is also extremely family-friendly, so appeals to a wide range of clientele.

Verbier, Switzerland

When most people think of a luxury ski resort, they think of Verbier. Just a two-hour drive from Geneva with a buzzing and varied après ski scene, there’s plenty to do here at any time of year. For adrenaline seekers, paragliding, climbing and sky diving are popular in the summer months. There’s also plenty of opportunities for biking and hiking. For those who wish to relax, there’s no shortage of spas for a place to unwind.
