A brand new mixed-use development is underway in one of North London’s most popular centres for artisan creativity and trading, as developers have already begun breaking ground at Camden Goods Yard.
Camden Council, Berkeley Group member St George and the fourth largest chain of supermarkets in the UK, WM Morrison Supermarkets, have all joined forces to deliver a new construction project.
All parties aim to transform an eight-acre brownfield site situated in the centre of Camden Town into a multifunctional development composed of 644 open market and affordable homes, a rooftop farm, a 55,000 sq ft Morrisons supermarket, 115,000 sq ft Grade A office space, 6,000 sq ft affordable workspace for SMEs shops and cafes, maker workshops, and many more facilities for the community to benefit from.
David Potts, chief executive officer of Morrisons, comments: “We’ve been working hard over the last four years to get to this point. It feels like a pivotal moment to be breaking the ground at the site along with our partner, St George, and Camden Council. We hope that the regeneration of this brownfield area and our development of a new flagship Morrisons store will create a positive extension to the already vibrant Camden community.”
How residents and workers will benefit
The construction project will be situated in an easy to access location for commuters between Camden Town and Primrose Hill. Chalk Farm and Camden Town Station (Northern Line, Zone 2) are less than a 10-minute walk away.
After the development is completed, around 73 apprenticeships aim to be provided in addition to 1,150 permanent jobs. During construction, roughly 780 jobs will be provided too.
The creators of the new development say they are committed to supporting wildlife and community wellbeing. Developers plan to dedicate three acres of the site to natural habitats, featuring wild planting, trees, and extensive play facilities for children of all ages for the whole community to benefit from.
With already so much to do in Camden, the new project should reflect the vibrancy of the area. Developers of The Interchange Yard, the main area of public open space, strive to create a new community hotspot for Camden. Planning for this public space includes allotments, three public squares, a rooftop urban farm that includes a growing facility, and a café-restaurant.
