Where are the top UK holiday home locations for 2020/21?

Wales is the top holiday home location in the UK for 2020/21, according to research from holiday home insurance company Schofields Ltd.

The latest data from the firm also reveals where the most holiday homes are owned, the most up-and-coming holiday home locations, and where people are looking to visit once we are able to travel within the UK again (the survey was taken before hotels, B&Bs and Airbnb lets were allowed to reopen their doors in England on July 4).

In a previous survey, Schofields found that travellers were most concerned about holiday companies not being financially sound and that their bookings would be lost or cancelled if they went bust. After this, people expressed their concerns for their own personal health.

The new data reveals that, even amidst a global pandemic, people still want hope for the future. The findings show that people are still renewing their insurance contracts on holiday homes and new contracts are rolling in.

Where are the top UK holiday home locations?

In a world of booming staycations and a significant rise in domestic tourism, investors will be keen to put their money in places where demand is consistently high.

The top holiday home locations in the UK based on figures for holiday home insurance contracts renewed and purchased between January and June 2020 were revealed to be:

1. Wales
2. Cornwall
3. Scotland
4. Devon
5. North Yorkshire

The top 10 was completed by Norfolk, the Highlands, Cumbria, Dorset and Northumberland.

What about the up-and-coming holiday home locations?

In 2020 and 2021, it will be more important than ever for people to get away from home to take a break, but Schofields says many of us are understandably nervous about personal health concerns so want to stay away from the crowds.

The data of renewed holiday home contracts was also compared to new contracts taken out between January and June 2020. These locations are likely to be less crowded than other more popular resorts, but are rising through the charts. The top five were County Durham, Wiltshire, East Yorkshire, Cumbria and Suffolk.

Kent, West Yorkshire, Somerset, Hampshire and East Sussex completed the top 10, all with an increase in contracts of more than a quarter (25%).

Phil Schofield, head of inbound marketing, said of the top holiday home locations: “Getting away from home safely once restrictions have been lifted is something that’s on everyone’s minds. Holiday homes and holiday cottages are top of people’s lists due to their privacy and ease.”

“Data suggests that people in the UK take breaks of 2-3 days more frequently than any other length of holiday, so being able to make a short journey with less stress to a holiday cottage or holiday home is really important.”

He added: “The top locations for holiday homes in 2020 aren’t a surprise to us, but the up-and-coming locations are interesting. It seems that people are wanting to find destinations that are off the usual beaten track in the UK and won’t be quite so crowded as the hotspots.”

“Hopefully, our data will help tourists choose destinations for short breaks in the UK where they can easily find holiday cottage accommodation but will have plenty to see and do,” he says.
