‘Exciting’ new Cornish properties brought to the market as restrictions ease

An estate agency based in Rock, North Cornwall, has said the recent easing of lockdown restrictions has led to a number of desirable properties going up for sale.

Josephine Ashby of John Bray & Partners said: “Early spring tends to be the time we see a surge of new instructions in this part of the world. When the lockdown was announced, we had a number of prime properties ready to go, but these have been on hold, waiting for an ease in restrictions. Now the industry has been given the green light, and it’s possible for sales to proceed, we have been given the go-ahead by many vendors to release several new very exciting properties to the market.”

She added: “While the market is not yet even approaching ‘normal’, we have found that there are a significant number of extremely determined buyers.”


The Cornish agency’s web traffic has increased by 102% since the government announced that viewings could now be conducted, while new users are up 128%, indicating that there is a definite appetite from buyers looking for a coastal property in Cornwall. Tricky viewing protocols (with various social distancing and hygiene protocols in place) aren’t daunting buyers who are ready to go and motivated to secure a property by the coast.

“Our vendors are understandably expecting us to be vigilant in our assessment of potential buyers’ ability to proceed with a purchase in order to rule out unnecessary viewings,” Ashby continued.

“Initial viewings are still being undertaken virtually where possible, we are also FaceTiming buyers from vacant properties to allow them to view and interact while we are at the property. We are booking in-person viewings by appointment-only and have conducted them following a series of safe working practices.”

She said the following properties have recently been launched onto the market, or are now being actively marketed having been given a low-key profile in recent weeks.

Staycations set to boom

With Brits being warned that they may have to put their usual summer holidays abroad on hold this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, staycations – which have been growing in prominence year-by-year anyway as people consider their carbon footprint and seek to enjoy the delights on their doorstep – are set to soar this year.

The South West has been one of the least-affected regions by Covid-19, and may prove to be a safe haven for visitors from other parts of the country as long as this is done in a safe and sensible way to avoid a potentially devastating second peak.

Locals residents are also wary of people coming from virus hotspots and potentially compromising hospitals in a region that would be less able to cope with a sudden spike in cases, but the government is working closely with the tourism, hospitality and leisure sectors to ensure these sectors are reopened in a safe and phased manner.

Even before this crisis hit, Cornwall was one of the most popular staycation and second home destinations in the UK. It’s often described as the jewel in the crown of the UK, with its unique culture, independent spirit, micro-climate, charming fishing villages, fine beaches, surfing opportunities and historical attractions.

It would seem that investors looking to invest in a safe haven, that will be in high demand from domestic holidaymakers, could certainly do far, far worse than Cornwall.
