Capability Brown's former Hampton Court home goes up for sale

Prestbury House, the Grade II-listed, 7,305 sq ft home which used to be owned by famous gardener Lancelot 'Capability' Brown, is up for sale.

The £6.5 million manor house, which also has connections to King George III and the Russian Romanov dynasty, is located off Hampton Court Road, South West London, and opens onto Bushy Park.

It's being marketed by high-end agency Beauchamp Estates, which is describing it as the 'perfect lockdown pad' for Londoners dreaming of more living space, amenities and outdoor space.

The eight bedroom Georgian property boasts grand living spaces, a large family kitchen, breakfast room, dining room, study, first-floor lounge/media room, master bedroom suite with master bathroom, and seven further bedrooms.

There is also a staff kitchen, wine cellars and a separate artist’s studio/day room in the substantial gardens: everything needed for what Beauchamp Estates describes as 'luxurious self-isolation'.

Currently unoccupied, the property is interior designed and dressed, available for an asking price of £6.5 million or to let at £4,500 per week.

Prestbury House was originally built in 1742, extended in 1778 and then refurbished in 1935 and 2011. It was built to provide an official residence for the Royal Master Gardener to King George II and later King George III.

The world-famous gardener Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown used the residence as his offices, before sub-letting it to one of his estate managers.

In 1945, Prestbury House was sold and became a privately owned residence, a status that remains up until the present day.

"Prestbury House is magnificent turn-key dressed manor house in Bushy Park, it is truly an outstanding lockdown pad, providing everything needed for self-isolation," says Jeremy Gee, managing director of Beauchamp Estates.

"The house and gardens provide all the space and facilities needed to entertain a family during the current UK lockdown, allowing for a range of different work, cultural or leisure activities."

The agency is offering interested parties a 360 degree virtual viewing tour of the property, enabling applicants to view the home remotely from anywhere in the world.

The viewing screen and phone of the applicant and Beauchamp sales agent can be linked, enabling the agent to answer questions during the remote tour.
