New development – go-ahead for 56 new apartments in Longbridge

The dedicated housebuilding arm of developer St. Modwen has secured approval for 56 new apartments in Longbridge Town Centre.

St. Modwen Homes was given the green light after Birmingham City Council’s Planning Committee resolved to grant planning permission subject to conditions and a S106 Agreement, at a virtual hearing on Thursday July 30.

Set over four floors, the ‘L’ shaped building will include a fifth storey on the corner elevation, and will include a mix of 35 two-bedroom apartments and 21 one-bedroom apartments, each finished with a balcony or terrace space.

Primarily built from brick in a range of grey, silver and blue shades, the building, which will be set at the corner of Cooper Way and Austin Way, has been designed to be in-keeping with typical St. Modwen Homes’ modernistic style with contemporary elevations. As well as this, it aims to be in-keeping with the adjacent commercial, retail and residential facades.

Found within Longbridge town centre, which includes high-quality offices, shops, restaurants and leisure facilities, all overlooking Austin Park, the scheme’s residents are also set to benefit from excellent transport links to Birmingham via Longbridge train station. This offers direct access to the city centre in around 20 minutes, while the scheme is also close to the A38, associated bus routes and the National Cycle Route 5 (NCR5). 

Dave Smith, managing director at St. Modwen Homes, said: “Housebuilding is at the very forefront of the economy – now more than ever, so we’re delighted to receive the unanimous committee decision from Birmingham City Council for our apartment scheme in Longbridge Town Centre.”

He added: “Not only is Longbridge one of St. Modwen’s most successful urban regeneration projects, but it is also our home – so we’re thrilled to bring our signature contemporary style that has set us apart from the market and thoughtful approach to design, to the area.”

The firm says that 10% affordable housing will be provided at the development, offered at a 20% discount of the market sale values. Along with the apartments, the scheme will provide 28 car parking spaces and secure storage parking for 56 bicycles.
