A slice of Lake District history went under the hammer with £1 guide price

A bridge and riverside plot located in Lake District was the highlight of Landwood Property Auctions’ most recent sale.

On offer for as little as £1, the historic Grade II-listed Calvert Bridge and strip of woodland on Penrith Road went up for grabs at the online auction.

The plot was inspired by the 18th century poet William Wordsworth, and the bridge was named after his school friend William Calvert – located in the heart of the Lake District over the River Greta.

James Ashworth, director of Landwood Property Auctions, said: “This really is a classic auction plot. It’s really hard to put a reserve on this kind of lot, but as it is so unique, we expected it to generate a huge amount of interest.”

“Although we have had other historic properties in Cumbria that have gained a lot of interest, it is very rare for us to have such a picturesque plot available, especially one with so much history attached to it.”

He added: “The prospect of owning such an historic site, potentially for less than the average office secret santa budget, captured some imaginations at the very least.”

Based in Manchester, Landwood Property Auctions has had a successful year selling unusual commercial and residential properties around the UK.

Homes are increasingly being sold, bought and invested in through online auctions. The total value of UK property sold via online auction in 2018 was £236 million, with 2019 expected to be broadly similar or even higher.
