Developer wins approval for £25m Cambridge PBSA scheme

Future Generation has secured planning permission for a £25 million student scheme in Cambridge.

The developer – a PBSA arm of developer Southern Grove – consulted officers, local councillors and residents over the past 18 months before receiving approval for the 154-bed project, named ‘Barnwell Gate’.

Most of the accommodation will consist of clusters of rooms, with shared living and kitchen facilities through 20 self-contained studio apartments also provided.

Cambridge university is just a 10-minute cycle ride away. The current occupants of the site at 444 Newmarket Road, a car dealership, will be relocating to another premises.

“This attractive scheme is going to continue to show off our strengths when it comes to designing spacious living quarters that don’t cut corners when it comes to design and quality of life for students,” Andrew Southern, chairman of Southern Grove and Future Generation, comments.

“While demand for student accommodation in some parts of the country is beginning to tail off, there is huge ongoing demand for purpose-built student accommodation in Cambridge.”
