Plans for almost 18,500 new homes in Redbridge discussed

Councillors met last week to discuss a draft version of the Local Plan for housing in Redbridge which outlines plans for 18,474 new homes in the London borough over the next 15 years.

The report acknowledges that at least 32,000 new homes are required to meet growing demand by 2030, and yet there is widespread protest against potential plans to develop 800 homes on the Oakfields Playing Fields in Barkingside.

But Cllr Nick Hayes’ proposed amendment recommending that the potential estate be designated as local open space, before it goes before the council, was rejected by the majority of councillors.

Cllr Varinder Singh Bola commented: “The reason I cannot support this amendment is that I don’t believe in closing a door on the option.

“We are discussing the housing plans for this borough for the next 15 years.”

The draft Local Plan will now be discussed by cabinet tomorrow (7 June) and full council on 21 July.

If approved, the plan will be consulted on in July and September before being submitted to the Secretary of State in the autumn.
