Revealed: Where Brits are buying property overseas

In 2013, the United Nations (UN) revealed that over five million Brits are now living outside of the UK. However it appears that the choice of country differs depending on those who are choosing to live full-time overseas, against those who are purchasing a holiday home.

The United Nations report detailed that the top ten countries with the most expat Britons largely consisted of English-speaking countries such as Australia, USA and Canada. The rest of the top ten comprised of countries such as Spain, New Zealand and South Africa.

Interestingly, A Place in the Sun’s annual top ten table, detailing the most searched for and enquired property destinations in 2015 shows differing results to that of the UN.

The top five countries based on enquiries for holiday homes or potential investment locations were much closer to home; Spain, France, Portugal, Italy and Florida.

When asked by A Place in the Sun why they are considering emigrating overseas, the over 45 year old demographic revealed that they simply wanted a better way of life (74%), or a warmer climate than what is occurring on the British Isles (70%).

Overseas buyers also felt that by emigrating, they would also be able to get a lot more property for their money, as well as being able to maintain a healthier lifestyle.

Andy Bridge, A Place in the Sun, commented: When comparing the top ten most searched and enquired locations against this UN data, there are more differences than similarities. The USA does feature, with Florida the key destination, however the majority are closer to home; France, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus with Thailand also creeping into the top ten. This can be attributed to the reason behind the purchase – a holiday home.”
