Location has been named as the top characteristic that makes Brits fall in love with their home, according to a recent survey by My Home Move.

Over half of homeowners surveyed (58%) named location as the number one reason across all regions and genders.

When choosing a property’s location, buyers favour good transport links, a nearby green area and being in close proximity to shops, cafes and restaurants, according to the findings.

Location was also the biggest reason for a buyer to reject a property.

The price of a property was ranked as the second most important feature leading buyers to fall in love with a home, cited by 37% of respondents.

Having a well-maintained garden, a quintessentially British attribute, came in third, highlighting the need for sellers to look after their garden, even in the winter months.

Other factors which affected a buyers decision was the property’s interior and the living area.

Aside from location, for those in their 20’s, having a nearby school and being in an up-and-coming area also ranked highly.

Doug Crawford, CEO of My Home Move, commented: “Britain’s love affair with property is built on location. For most people, location is the secret ingredient that makes them fall in or out of love with their home.”

“Unfortunately, not all of those buying a home have the flexibility to pick and choose their ideal location or a perfect interior, especially as demand continues to outstrip supply. Compromise may have to become the buzz word of 2016.”
