Flatsharers vote flatmates over location

EasyRoommate has revealed that 78% of flatsharers care more about who they live with than the location they live in, it has been reported.

In the study by the flatshare website, a good living companion must have a great sense of humour (48%), be sociable (46%) and responsible.

Half of the respondents also revealed that they would ideally like to live with two flatmates or fewer, yet one in five flatsharers live in a packed property of five or more sharers.

It also revealed that flatsharers care more about the aesthetics of the homes they live in rather than the area. However, certain postcodes were voted more desirable than others.

This was particularly pronounced in the capital, with Notting Hill voted the most popular postcode for flatsharers, followed by Camden, Shoreditch, Soho and Angel.

However, with rents in these areas increasing rapidly in recent years, 73% of flatsharers surveyed said that they were unable to move to their desired location because of high rents.

Almost half also claimed that a further increase in rent could force them to leave London altogether.

EasyRoommate Chief Executive, Albin Serviant, commented: “The research highlights that rising costs are making it harder for flatsharers to move to their dream ‘boastcode’. If sharers can’t live in their ideal location, it’s all about making sure they have the crème de la crème of house buddies.”
