Corrie cobbles best value for money in soap rent war

Coronation Street has been revealed as the soap with the best value for money property-wise, in research by online letting agency Rentify, whereas Eastenders has been named as one of the most expensive.

Soaps never shy away from telling stories of scandal and lies, but we often forget about the mundane things that would be a part of the characters lives, such as paying rent each month. 

This research identified that a three bedroom property in Coronation Street, the longest running soap opera, offers the best value for money, whilst also being the cheapest location to live. 

Those who live close to the famous Rovers Return in the North West of England would have to pay approximately £620 per month for rent. Coronation Street’s longest running character, Ken Barlow, has racked up a huge rent bill of over £400,000 in his 54 year stay on the Manchester street. 

Hollyoaks takes second place, a Chester based show containing plenty of student properties, with the average rent coming in at £820 per month and the greener Emmerdale taking third with an average of £697 per month.

Whilst the Australians in Summer Bay and Ramsey Street have to pay more for their rent, they do get to have stunning surrounds and the country's beautiful weather, with rents at £2,300 and £1,700 respectively.

Walford, a fictional borough set in the heart of East London has the highest rent of the British soap operas, and with a prime London location and closeness to a tube station it’s hardly surprising. The average rent here for a three bed property stands at £2,100 per month, with the longest running character Ian Beale having to fork out over £775,440 throughout his 30 year stay in Albert Square.

“With rising rents in London becoming farcical, it’s often a source of worry for many viewers. Perhaps it’s time we saw the likes of the Beales and the Mitchells thinking about rent on-screen,” comments George Spencer, CEO of Rentify.
