South Yorkshire, a county in northern England, is known for its industrial heritage and incredible countryside. And with excellent transport links, a superb selection of schools, and plenty of green spaces, it’s no surprise that around 1.4 million people call it home.

In this article, we take a look at some of the best areas to live in South Yorkshire, including some of the reasons why you’d want to move there. If you’ve currently got itchy feet and are thinking of moving, one of these locations may be the right choice for you.

Sheffield

Once a city famed for its steel industry, Sheffield is now a cultural hub teeming with independent shops, bars, restaurants, and several world-class universities. Aside from this, South Yorkshire’s biggest city is also a popular destination for relocation due to low living costs and easily accessible transport links.

The Steel City’s housing market has undergone growth and development over the last decade and prices have continued to remain below the UK average. You’re also more likely to find something a little more spacious compared to cities like London and Leeds.

Let’s also not forget one of Sheffield’s biggest attractions, the Peak District National Park. Located just a mere few miles from the city centre, you can escape the bustle of everyday life and head out on a walk through natural beauty.

Doncaster

As a result of the growing population and lower property prices than other UK regions, Doncaster has seen a significant increase in real estate investment. The city is desirable for young professionals and businesspeople alike looking to commute to work, as it offers quick access to major cities like Leeds and Manchester.

Potential homeowners have a wide range of options when it comes to housing in Doncaster which includes new build homes, mansions, and terraces – most of which are located near the city centre. Highly sought-after areas in Doncaster include Bessacar, Tickhill, and Auckley.

Rotherham

Located to the northeast of Sheffield, Rotherham is South Yorkshire’s third-largest settlement and is made up of the town itself as well as several smaller towns, villages, and hamlets. You could say the Minster town is up-and-coming due to its recent regeneration announcements to improve the market square, create more green spaces, and construct a new leisure facility.

Having previously been overlooked, Rotherham is now becoming a highly sought-after place to live -especially with prices as low as £160,000 for a home. Rotherham also benefits from being located close to cities like Leeds and Sheffield, both of which can be accessed by train or bus. And the crime rate here is much lower than in nearby cities, so families can rest assured that their local community is a friendly one.
